Boneset is a plant native to the wetlands of North America that has a long medicinal history and an attractive, distinctive appearance. Boneset was a favorite remedy of the Native North American tribes. The Menominees used it to reduce fever, the Iroquois and Mohegans for fever and colds, the Alabamas for upset stomachs and Creeks for body pain. Native Americans also used Boneset for arthritis, indigestion, constipation and loss of appetite.
Properties: The energetics and flavour of Boneset are bitter, astringent and cooling. Boneset has an affinity towards the stomach, liver, bowels, uterus, lungs, musculoskeletal system and immune system. Combine Boneset with Echinacea, Licorice and Elderflower to support the immune system. For lung support mix Boneset with Horehound Leaf, Mullein Leaf or Plantain Leaf. For support with painful joints and bones combine Boneset with Nettle Leaf, Ginger Root and Turmeric Root.
How to use: 1 teaspoon of Boneset to one cup of boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes, strain and drink up to three cups a day.
Precautions: This is a strong herb that should be used only when needed. Excessive dosage will cause purging. Boneset is related to gravel root which contains potentially liver damaging alkaloids.
