Oregon Grape Root

1 oz

A flowering, evergreen shrub in the Barberry Family, native to western North America, Oregon Grape Root (Berberis aquifolium) plant reaches a height of 2m. It has glossy, spiny leaflets that resemble holly leaves, dense clusters of fragrant, yellow flowers and dark blueish-black, dusty berries which are reminiscent of grapes, hence the common name Oregon Grape. Traditionally, the tart tasting berries form part of the diet of Pacific North-western indigenous tribes, who also use different parts of the plant to treat a wide variety of ailments. The Oregon Grape Roots are known for their cleansing properties thanks to an abundant level of berberine, the yellow color of the roots is a visual marker for this alkaloid component.
